And so the theory came true

Hi all,

So as you know I´ve studied a course in MUSIC and HEALTH for some weeks and in that course we´ve talked about music and its impact of our health and yesterday I found evidence of a theory we´ve read about. Not planned from my part but let me tell you what happened=)

I was in church a while ago and while I was in there lighting a candle there were a piano player and a saxophone player rehearsing and it was SO incredibly beautiful that I couldn't walk away. Sat there with tears in my eyes and felt the BEST feeling of FLOW in my body…

So I ran home, started to search for when these guys were gonna have a concert and to my luck I found out they had some concerts planned and one for a lunch concert. I checked the date, yesterday, and called my mum and asked if she wanted to join me and she did.

I was so excited, I had longed to get some nice music in my ears and to sit there with my dear mum and have a great time.

When we sat there in the church, a lady came and said: have you gotten todays programme? No, I said and she gave it to us. I read and am shocked cause the names on the performers are totally different! Its a pianist and a soprano singer that are performing! I say to mum I must have made a mistake on the dates and I check out internet and YES, the other lovely musicians played already LAST week!

Damn! I saw the programme was filled with opera arias and such and well, I truly DONT like opera and classical singing so much so if it was only me, I would had gone home beforehand but mum likes it so I stayed.

It started and after ONE song I had the worst headache, tensed jaws and I felt like I wanted to escape. And believe me, the soprano was really TECHNICALLY talented. If you like classical singers you would like it and she had a great technique of course but for me, all I heard was sounds that make me cringe and I just sat there and tried to focus on WHY it affects me so badly?

I mean, I am a musician myself, I love music, I am a so called ALL-EATER and accept most music. I can listen to Sarah Brightman, Katherine Jenkins and such for some songs but still this music
DOESN´T touch me at all. It make me feel sick instead…

And this is what we´ve studied. That for one person a song can move the person to wonderful soothing and comforting places, touch their heart so they start to cry BUT for another person the same song can make that person physically feel ill and get the total opposite effect.

And I am now the proof of the theory=)

I still have a headache and as I´ve always said- I do not like opera and classical singing. I am impressed by the singers technique BUT they do not MOVE me at all. They do not touch me and the high notes give me a headache

So no more concerts of this sort for me=)

Mum on the other hand liked it, hehe!

Love and light,
Anette

I like the sound of their voices but can't stand it when the words are in English and I still can't understand them! Like they are too over-emphasised. I know exactly where you're coming from though....I know this may sound strange to someone from Sweden but I actually can't stand ABBA! Haha! They give me a headache and really miserable feelings. But we're all different ;) Like you, I enjoy LOADS of music styles but occasionally something just doesn't work for me.

Maybe it's somehow related to that, that you know how exhausting it is to sing opera, you somehow feel it with your throat and jaw, and you get tense, and get headache... I don't know :)
But, think how good it is that we all have different taste in music! Otherwise there wouldn't be any music at all :)
What makes some music wonderful for someone and the worst pain for others? Really interesting question....
Thanks again for taking up an interesting topic :)

i do understand your point of view. technycally it could be very beautiful, but i tend to not like listening to opera music... there is tw kind of voices i could stand in classical music, both males: bass voices (the deeper the better), and sopranists (the highest the better). and i do love listening to mozart's operas, that's the exception of the rule.
thank you for sharing your story with us. :) <3

Hey Anette,

this is a very interesting topic. I actually believe too that music have an impact on our health and mental condition. On days I feel down, it sometimes helps me to listen to a song I really like and it makes my mood better. Music can give us new power, hope, let us relax or just make us happy. Make us enjoying a moment much more intense and deep.
On the other hand, I have also experienced that a song made me feel horrible, tired or even angry.

Best wishes with many love,
Jade

Hi Anette!

Well, this experience You had is interesting, but I'm sorry for your headache and hope it already got better by now :). And well, opera Singing is indeed not that easy to listen to I think. I was only one time at an opera, in january this year, and well, I can't say that I don't like it, the opera itself (Nabucco) was quite nice, but it also didn't make me feel like wanting to see any more opera. I didn't get a headache or something like that, and the singers were, as far as I can say that with hardly any Knowledge about this subject, talented too and it was nice listening for a while, but I also didn't feel like being moved or touched. And After some time, it just all sounded like the same over and over again, even when it wasn't. The lyrics they sang were in italian, and italian is a Language, well kinda difficult to describe, that I don't speak and only understand a little, but when I hear italian being spoken, I can imagine what the words are like, how they are Written and so on, but when they sang with opera technique, I couldn't figure out anything. I guess they could also have sung in German or English and I wouldn't have understood much :D

So much for my opera experience and I can understand you, I kinda liked the entire thing, but not too much the singing itself. And I say that as someone who, as a metalhead (but I also listen to other types of music, I'm not only restricted to metal) listens also to Singing techniques that others can't listen too, like Bands who use growling, screaming and so on, Hypocrisy or In Flames for instance. Haha, I know people who, when for example they hear a growler, are like "turn that off, it terrifies me!!" :D. And that is of course ok, I mean taste is varied. But listening to Metal with lots of growls or shouts for instance is for me easier and more comfortable than listening to opera singing :).

Thank you for talking to us about your experiences on that, it's really interesting how music can affect people so differently, just as you studied in your course.

And before I go to bed because of having to get up early tomorrow I want to wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Johan :). I hope you and him had a great day with your Family and with lots of joy and love :).

Enjoy this evening now dear Anette and have a great start tomorrow into the weekend! Lots of hugs and light to you :).

I find the style of singing beautiful but some annoying/ too much vibrato/lack of emotion. But I enjoy as you say Sarah brightnan, Katherine Jenkins, and of course Tarja is one of my all time favorite singers. Aren't you a fan of tarjas voice?

This creates a very interesting theory for hindsight Anette. Do you think, on some level, this could be something that affected you during your time in NW? I recall reading things you wrote while youwe're with them about being unwell (pregnancy excluded). Maybe a mental connection with their music and classical singing could have taken it's toll on your health subconsciously.
Hope Johan had a great birthday!
Iain.
